What are you wearing for the holidays?

Plan now so you are not standing in front of your closet stressing about what to wear before your next holiday party.

I am sharing the module method, the process I use for creating seasonal capsule wardrobes for my clients. See how I created a holiday capsule—from inspo to the final outfits—and how you can too.

What is the module method? Each module is made up of three tops, two bottoms, and one jacket. Six items that can mix and match to create twelve interchange outfits.

Create an Inspo Board

The process of creating a module begins with gathering inspiration. Pinterest is a great resource for finding outfit photos. Choose five or six. Create an inspo board. The photos will become an important resource when you go to shop, whether it's from your own closet or for something new.

I wanted to create a holiday capsule that captured the bright colors and festive atmosphere. I searched Pinterest for outfits that were fancy enough for holiday parties as well as casual outfits for running holiday errands. I love the bright pop of red in the outfits I chose. Red is a color everyone can wear since it comes in cooler shades like burgundy and warmer shades like maroon. Luckily it’s on trend this season too.

When looking for your inspo images, ask yourself… What about the season inspires you? What do you want to look like? How do you want to feel in what you wear? Once you have an idea, give it a name. Designers name their collections, and you can too. Choose outfits that fit the theme of the collection you are creating.

Shop Your Closet

Since I am creating my holiday capsule from scratch, I needed to shop for all new pieces, something my personal shopping clients often need to do. If you are following along from home, take a look inside your closet before you shop. What do you already have that could work to create the outfits from your inspo board? Set aside anything that could work, and only shop to fill in the gaps.

When I shop I bookmark everything that is the right color or silhouette, then narrow it down by style. As I start to mix and match, I select pieces that when combined create the aesthetic that most closely resembles the outfits on my inspo board. I am looking for a mod retro vibe and playful color combinations. Red-on-red and sequins are too dramatic. Prints and patchwork are too bohemian. Vintage details are too costume-like. Whereas the color-blocking feels just right. It's time to create the final looks.

Create Your Module

To select the final pieces for your capsule, create a uniform—a combo you can repeat with different items. For my uniform, I chose similar tops. It is the bottoms that dress the outfits up or down. While I generally suggest two bottoms for a capsule, I chose three for this capsule. The red skirt and pants are festive and can be worn for different occasions depending on the activities. The jeans are quite casual and are perfect for running holiday errands.

Narrowing down the items prior to purchasing allows you to get exactly what you need to create your final head-to-toe looks. The exact number of pieces and outfits you need may vary. Be flexible. Start small. After you have created your first module, you can slowly expand your wardrobe over time by building off the first module to create a second, third, and so on.
